We have gophers and moles. That's just the nature of the land in this area. We were using another type of gopher tool for the first few years and it started jamming. I found this tool on Amazon and bought two of them. The Yard Butler is much better quality than our other ones. The cylinder to distribute the poison is bigger and stronger. The whole unit is built well.
We use the Yard Butlers daily and have not had any problems with jamming. The mole tunnels are easy to find and poison. The gophers are a different matter. These tools are so sturdy it's easy to go through hard dirt and clay to find to their tunnels.
UPDATE 11/2010 There is one small caveat with this machine. Do not use it as a walking stick! The dispenser tube is made from two pieces: the long tube and then a second piece that forms the point. My husband used it was a walking stick on concrete (before he got to the hay field) for several months until the point caved in from all that punishment - he pretty much slammed it on the concrete with each step. I'm amazed the point lasted as long as it did.
Since the first order, I've purchased four more. These purchases were made after the first unit was damaged because we did not see the point/cement situation being a deterrent. We strategically place the units around the hay meadow so about the time we run out of poison in the one we're using, we're near a full one. These units hold quite a bit of poison and we have quite a large area to cover.
I should explain the reason reason we use the handheld units instead of a big tractor pulled poisoner. The first reason is we control the amount and location of the poison we put in the earth. The second reason is we've discovered the tractor pulled units simply create an expressway for the little critters to use at their leisure.
Oh, yes, my husband no longer uses the units as a walking stick on concrete.

Tip: Probe for tunnel using 18-inch long Phillips screwdriver available at Harbor Freight. Once tunnel has been located, then plunge Yard Butler into tunnel.

I've had one of these bait applicators for several years and have used it with a lot of success. Previous to this I tried hand applied baits, traps and the non-effective water hose. Out of those choices, the traps worked the best except you had to actually face your gopher victim which is not particularly pleasant if your gopher is still alive because they're nasty, aggressive little critters . The bait applicator works better than all of them.
With the bait applicator, as soon as you find some fresh diggings, you start probing for the tunnels around the new site with the long probe of the device, drop some pellets in the tunnel via the crank & pellet holder and the gopher digging just stops. It's almost anti-climatic. YOU don't have to dig for their tunnels and THEY just disappear. If you fancy yourself as a "Gopher Killer" as did Bill Murray in the movie "Caddyshack" this device just takes all the drama out of gopher control.
It does require a little artsy-crafty skill because you have to "feel" for the "drop" of the probe into the tunnel which can be a little tricky in loose sand but one develops a skill and becomes quite accurate.
