Planet Waves PW-HPK-01 Review by The Listener "chaszz" (Carmel, NY USA)

This Humidipak system has had little or no effect on the humidity of my guitar. During the summer, when the humidity in my guitar case was about 75, I started using the system. The humidity did not change at all. I had to add a number of little bags of dessicant to get it down almost into the safe zone. I do not use air conditioning which might have helped. Now that winter is approaching, when the cold weather comes, I will try this Humidipak system and see if it works. If not, I will use the old Planet Waves sponge-based humidifier which I found effective last winter.

Planet Waves PW-HPK-01 Review by Scott F.

THIS THING WORKS!! I used this overseas in Iraq for over a month and it endured the hot sand and sun of Baghdad for 2 days! The gel pack definitely served its purpose for protecting my small investment and it will be an addition to all of my guitars ASAP!! Just keep it in the case and case closed while playing and of course while the guitar is in the case! Works great! Saw improvement in action on the fretboard and on the soundboard!!

Planet Waves PW-HPK-01 Review by Samuel P Brutcher

I've been using this product for about a year and I have mixed feelings about it. I've had to Google all over the place to find out how it's actually supposed to work. If I understand correctly, the Humidipak will NOT optimize the humidity level in your guitar case. That is, the device itself cannot reduce the humidity in a case from 63%, for example, down to the desired 45-50%. I'm not sure this was clear from the instructions or from most of the reviews I've read. It certainly wasn't the impression I got from the Guitar Center guy who recommended it to me. The hype is "Just drop it in and you're good to go." It's not quite that simple.

Again if I understand correctly, the Humidipak is intended to MAINTAIN whatever humidity level already exists in your guitar case. It prevents sudden and excessive rises and drops in humidity. If your guitar is accustomed to 63% humidity, you don't want it to suddenly go bone-dry at 30% or soaking wet at 80%, due to changes in the weather or travel to different climates. If the humidity in your case is at the optimum 45-50%, you want it to stay there despite changes in the environment - such as the a/c or heat cycling on and off. I believe that stability is what the Humidipak is meant to provide. It's up to you to set up the optimum humidity using the various tools available for humidifying and dehumidifying your case. Once that's done, the Humidipak will help you keep that moisture level with less fuss. What it will not do is "solve all your guitar humidity problems."

I was using the Humidipak as instructed, expecting it to automatically maintain ideal moisture conditions in my guitar case. I didn't have a hygrometer - the sales pitch told me I didn't really need one because the HP would take care of everything for me. I finally bought a moisture sensor and discovered my case was at 60-65% RH. I tested the hygrometer and found it was reading correctly. Seemed like Humidipak wasn't behaving itself. Then I read the "humidity maintenance" theory and decided to do an experiment. I placed some silica gel in my guitar case and monitored the humidity until it was down to 45%. I left it that way for a while, then removed the silica and added the Humidipaks. The humidity rose to 50% and stayed there. As long as I don't leave the case open too long, the Humidipak seems able to maintain the humidity close to the desired level - not perfect, but not as bad as before the dehumidifying procedure. The Humidipak's instructions say to leave the case closed and the paks in the case when you're playing your guitar.

I'm expecting to have to use the silica again in the future. The initial dose may have dehumidified the air in the case, but the guitar itself will continue to lose moisture, causing the humidity to go back up. I'm thinking I can keep alternating silica and humidipaks until the humidity stabilizes. That should mean the guitar is at equilibrium with the air in the case - which is the whole purpose of this exercise.

If this is, in fact, the way Humidipaks are supposed to work, it would be helpful if Planet Waves, Taylor, and anybody who sells these things would do a better job of explaining it to consumers. Reading the ad copy, it's easy to get the impression that all you have to do is drop a couple of these things in your case and all your moisture problems are solved. It appears the situation is much more complicated than that.

Other reviewers, please let me know if any of this info is incorrect.
